Group Victory for Shrapnel…

Blue Sky Thoroughbreds have taken their 2009 Stallion Fund a step closer to producing commercial sires of tommorrow by winning the Group 3 Marsh Breeders Stakes with SHRAPNEL on the weekend.

A joint venture with Arrowfield Stud, the Stallion Fund is a unique concept created by Blue Sky Thoroughbreds and in the 2009 edition consists of just two colts; Group-winning Golden Slipper chance BENETEAU (Redoute’s Choice / Slice Of Paradise) and new Group 3 winner, SHRAPNEL (Charge Forward / Fragmentation). Rated 120p with Timeform Beneteau has impressed in his three starts to date displaying incredible raw talent and had certainly set the bar high for Shrapnel to follow.

Initially considered a better 3yo prospect by the stable, Shrapnel has surprised both trainer and connections with his precocity to win the Group 3 2yo feature on Saturday. From just two starts, Shrapnel has earned a rating the equal of impressive Group 2 Silver Slipper winner Chance Bye of 111p. A decision on whether Shrapnel will be spelled or sent to Sydney for the Golden Slipper will be made by Mark Kavanagh over the next week.

Shrapnel Wins Marsh Breeders’ Stakes

Gr1-winning Arrowfield Stud stallion Charge Forward (Red Ransom-Sydney's Dream, by Bletchingly) added a juvenile group success when his colt Shrapnel (Charge Forward-Fragmentation, by Snippets) scored a half-length victory in the $100,000 Gr3 Marsh Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) for 2YOs at Morphettville. Shrapnel (ridden by Simon Price for trainer Mark Kavanagh) defeated the fillies Yosei (Invincible Spirit-Fuji Fairy, by Fuji Kiseki) & Spirited Princess (Universal Prince-Spirited And Sexy, by King Ivor). Shrapnel (a $450,000 yearling at the 2009 Inglis Easter Sale in Sydney) now has a win & a placing (last start on debut in the Listed Queen Adelaide Stakes over 1000m at Morphettville on February 13) from 2 starts for $69,935 earnings.
